2018 SHNC Round 3: Sacramento Short Track

'GOLDEN STATE OF MIND'

Big Time Speedway hosted round #3 of the Super Hooligan National Championship, presented by Indian Motorcycles at the Prairie City OHV Park in Folsom Ca. … 20-miles from the American Flat Track running of the Sacramento Mile and just a stone’s throw away from 50th annual Hangtown Motocross Classic. Talk about an awesome venue, 836 acres of multi-use off-road-expanse near the Capital of the Golden State, beyond the Blue Oak trees back near the “moon room” just past the kart track at the 8th mile dirt oval is where on a Friday night, the action-packed weekend of motorbike racing kicked off.

The Greatest Show on Dirt, rolled into motion with a few 5-minute timed practices to sort rider starting positions for the five, 6-lap heat races. Two-riders directly transferred from each heat, the winners of the two semis and the LCQ, would also go through to make up 13-spots in the main---twelve of whom score points toward The Super Hooligan National Championship--- cycle-circus racing performed on heavy-weight 750cc and up production-based street bikes.

It’s a balancing act of sideways action and looking for traction guaranteed to be filled with thrills and spills. The hate of crashing and love of clashing, brings out best of the competitors’ character on track. Off the slippery circle, there was some clowning around by friends, series regulars and families, notably were the three father & son racers in the lineup. Spencers, Garcias and Beremans, all at Big Time Speedway track, racing for the win.

Two huckers from each of the five heat races shucked anxiety with direct transfers to the main. That didn’t come easy, all charged into turn one when the green-light came on, hauling ass and skidding shoe. Super Hooligan series frontrunner #27 Jordan Baber won heat one on his Harley Sportster, followed by #50 Jimmy McAllister. #7 Brad Spencer & #963 Mikey Virus, both on Harleys would advance from heat two. #1 Andy DiBrino & #653 Tyler Bereman moved through from heat three and heat four saw Indian Scout mounted #47 Jordan Graham & #12 AJ Kirkpatrick into the main. The last heat #7 Brad Spencer and his Sportster headed Frankie Garcia’s Ducati Scrambler.

Tyler Bereman explained “Getting better feel for the RSD Indian each time out, I don’t have a lot of seat-time, so I’m learning all the time.”

Semis saw some bar banging scraps from the go fast turn-left Hooligans who wrestled with a second chance to earn a spot into the main and stay away from the chain-link-fence-gang. Two more riders roosted their way through the semi’s and into the main: Brendan Foley #29 and #5 Randy Bereman. #9 Chris Wiggins snagged the last Main spot as winner of the LCQ.

Law Tigers Crash of the Day went to Red Bull’s Robbie Maddison, coming out of turn four in the semi, got tangled up with the water walls along the front straight. Maddo was unscathed and all smiles in front of the cheering crowd.

All riders were stoked about the wide banked track’s raceabilty and hoped to do their best in the main. Big Time Speedway Track was the place to be Friday May 18th!

3rd place Jordan Baber said on the podium “I was waiting for the staging guy to walk across the track and point at the starter but he never did. Light turned green and I was sitting there in neutral, worked my way up close on the outside of DiBrino to square’em up and get him at the finish but left the door open and Brad ran it up the inside. That was a bummer but it was some good racing, track got better and better, it all worked out.”

Winner of the Hippie Killer Hoedown Brad Spencer, won his heat, the $1,000 Dunlop Dash for Cash and when he saw an opening took 2nd position from Harley mounted #27 Jordan Baber on the last lap of the main, “Big thanks to everyone, Roland Sands Designs, for the backing the Super Hooligan Championship and Big Time Speedway for prepping an awesome track like they always do, this was a great event! And my family for being here with me” Brad enthused.

Number #1 plate holder Andy DiBrino, surmised after his First place win that “The D-shaped track and banking were awesome, my favorite part about this event. Taking the hole shot was nearly everything, it was a constant battle for traction ‘slow to be fast’. My toughest battle was with myself, to not make a mistake and leave the inside open.” DiBrino came home with Indian Motorcycle $1,000 Winner bonus, K&N Filter’s $300 Hole Shot Award as well as $500 in contingency payments from Dunlop Tires and Bell Helmets.

From the other side of the fence, the racing was exciting to watch. Racing along with the Super Hooligans and adding some 2 Stroke smoke to the air was Rod Lake's 125cc Invitational class and Steffan Nielsen's "Running of the Bul's" Bultaco qualifier. It was rad to see the overflow parking lot spilling over with spectators who enjoyed the slip sliding circular action of Super Hooligan racing. Afterwards everyone hung around in a golden state of mind, gabbing and grabbing beers and spreading cheer, until the RSD Team wrapped up and rolled out after a another successful night of The Greatest Show on Dirt.

Presenting Sponsor Indian Motorcycles is paying out $1,000 Winner-Takes-All bonus to the winner of the Super Hooligan Main Event. Dunlop tires is the official tire sponsor of the SHNC and have stepped up with $1,000 Dash for Cash races and purse money. K&N Filters and Bell Helmets are also involved in a big way, bringing fat contingency checks to the competitors, rewarding heroic rides and top finishers. K&N also returns with the main event Holeshot Award. We welcome new sponsors Law Tigers who brings some cash to the rider with the biggest get off. Sometimes when you lose you still win! For the series finale, Indian Motorcycle will close the series with another banger of a grand prize, a new, undisclosed Indian motorcycle modified by the crew at Roland Sands Design.
