Some bike builds come together fast. Others take time because every part has to earn its place.
The RSD x Royal Enfield 650 build falls into that second category. On the surface, it’s a fairly simple machine: clean lines, purposeful parts, and a stripped-back silhouette. But behind that simplicity is a deeper collaboration between Roland Sands Design and the engineering team at Royal Enfield—one focused not just on making something look good, but making something that could be manufactured, tested, ridden, and trusted.
For Roland Sands, that process is part of what makes the build special.
Rather than treating the Royal Enfield 650 as a blank canvas for a one-off custom, the goal was to dig into the platform and explore what it could become. That meant working directly with Royal Enfield’s engineering department to develop parts that carried the RSD visual language while still meeting the real-world demands of production, fitment, safety, and rideability.
It also meant working with people who actually care about the machines.
The visual direction for the build started at the tail section. Roland wanted to give the bike an 80s retro superbike feel—something with vintage race influence, but without losing the clean, approachable nature of the Royal Enfield 650 platform.
The finished bike hits that mark with a stance that feels athletic, stripped down, and ready to ride. The seating position was designed to be comfortable, but with enough attitude to change the entire personality of the machine.
That balance is what makes the build work. It’s not a showpiece pretending to be a race bike. It’s a rideable custom that shows how far the Royal Enfield 650 platform can be pushed with the right mix of design, performance, and restraint.
To give the bike sharper performance and a more aggressive feel, RSD added a few key race-inspired components.
The exhaust is an S&S system, bringing a more performance-driven look and sound to the build. Suspension was upgraded front and rear with Öhlins components, giving the bike a more serious foundation and improving the overall stance.
The cockpit also received attention. A custom riser allowed the team to run a straighter handlebar setup, giving the bike a more commanding rider position.
That line sums up the build perfectly. This isn’t a custom that only works under show lights. The posture, the controls, and the upgraded components all point toward a bike that wants to be ridden.
Every build has a defining detail. On this one, Roland’s favorite is easy: the wheels.
“Gold wheels, baby.”
The wheels helped drive the overall aesthetic of the bike. Roland designed them personally, pulling inspiration from classic five-spoke Morris wheels and giving the build a strong vintage performance cue. Finished in gold, they bring the right amount of flash without overpowering the rest of the bike.
They also help connect the visual story: 80s superbike influence, hot rod detail, race-inspired hardware, and a stance that feels both classic and modern.
Beyond the bigger visual elements, the build also features a number of smaller RSD-designed parts that help tie the whole bike together.
One of the recurring design themes is a ribbed aesthetic inspired by vintage hot rod styling. That detail appears across the bike and gives the build a handcrafted, mechanical quality.
The team also developed a shift lever, foot peg, and a new fender strut cover. The fender strut cover isn’t just a cosmetic piece—it’s made from one-piece aluminum and also acts as a fender brace.
That’s the kind of detail that defines a good custom part. It looks right, but it also does a job.
As any custom builder knows, modern motorcycles can come with modern complications—especially when electronics get involved.
One of the advantages of the Royal Enfield platform is that it keeps things relatively straightforward. According to Roland, the wiring harness on this bike is simple and approachable, making it a strong foundation for customization.
That simplicity matters. It gives builders room to create without getting buried in unnecessary complexity.
More than anything, this build proves a point: the Royal Enfield 650 platform has range.
Roland described the bike as one iteration of an endless variety of ideas that could be thrown at the machine. That’s the real story behind the build. It’s not just a custom Royal Enfield—it’s a proof of concept for what the 650 platform can become with the right vision behind it.
“I think we made a cool business case for this machine,” Roland said. “What this Royal Enfield 650 platform can do and can become… this is just one iteration of an endless variety of ideas you could throw at this machine.”
That’s what makes the collaboration between RSD and Royal Enfield so interesting. It blends design, engineering, and real-world manufacturing thinking into a custom build that feels both aspirational and attainable.
The RSD x Royal Enfield 650 made its appearance at The One Moto Show in Portland, giving riders a first look at the build, the parts, and the way everything comes together.
Royal Enfield will be taking the bike around so riders can see it in person, check out the components, and get a closer look at what’s possible with the platform.
Maybe it inspires the next build. Maybe it opens the door for more parts. Maybe it simply reminds people that a great custom bike doesn’t have to be overcomplicated.
It just has to have the right idea, the right people behind it, and the right set of gold wheels.
Come see the Royal Enfield 650 build at an upcoming show—and if you like it, make sure you tell them. Maybe they’ll build it.
